Meet the Founders
Drs Gaston and Loeffler co-founded the OrthoCarolina Reconstructive Center for Lost Limbs and are recognized as world leaders in the field of amputee care. They run the busiest upper limb amputee clinic in the US and have been highly engaged in amputee research for over a decade. In 2017, they invented the Starfish Procedure which enabled the first amputee in the world individual finger control of a prosthetic hand and were featured on CNN and Fox news. They then focused much of their research and practice to developing innovative surgical treatments to improve the interface between patients and prosthetics with over 30 published articles and textbook chapters devoted to advancements in amputee care. More recently, they have shifted their focus to preventing and curing phantom limb pain after witnessing first-hand the devastating effects this can have on the lives of amputees. Their amputee research has won awards from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), and Society of Military Orthopedic Surgery (SOMOS) as well as the JE Hanger Award for Innovation.
